No, We Cannot ‘Agree to Disagree’

Your white, hetero male privilege is showing. For the rest of us, the stakes couldn’t be higher.

Scrolling through FB after another day of relentless bad news, I saw a post from a man I admire; a man who is considered a leader in his community. As he is someone I know to be a champion of the oppressed and underprivileged, I was disheartened to see his short recounting of a recent dinner he had with an old friend — a Republican. The gist of the story was this: even though they have opposing views about politics and will never be able to influence the other the change, they can maintain their relationship by agreeing to disagree.

Several people commended him on his largess in the comments and I saw a few “I wish everyone thought like this” type responses.

I did not comment or respond to the post myself because I learned years and years and years ago that Facebook is no place for an argument with someone you care about. But I could not stop thinking about it. It actually woke me up in the middle of the night.

This man, my Facebook friend, is active in the Christian church but the inclusive, Jesus-like Christian church. I know for a fact that he not only works side by side with POC and LGBTQ but that he…
