While we can suppose Eric's suggestion, it would probably be wise to begin instead by understanding that bringing up race at all is, in our cultural reality, uncomfortable for some white parents. Regardless of how significant race should be, it is significant in the daily lives of many Americans; treating the subject as anything less than that makes connections across communities harder to establish and to maintain. The discomfort of having sensitive or difficult, but honest, conversations is outweighed by the good that comes from the understanding reached at the end of those conversations.
